I would never have expected to paint the rather austere Coast Guard station at Race Point in Provincetown. But one afternoon, I was intrigued to see it like this, as I looked up at it from the beach parking lot below. Although the setting sun had cast both the barren dune in the foreground and the front of the station into near-darkness, it had brilliantly lit the side of the building and the tops of the tall dune grasses in front of it - and somehow even caused the pale blue of the late-afternoon sky to be reflected against just two of the windows on the facade. Suddenly, a rather simple building and landscape seemed quite dramatic to my painter's eye.
